A busy schedule has, as usual, made it difficult for me to address current topics in a manner as timely as I'd like - but better late than never, I suppose. The recent death of the enormously influentual H.R. Giger has generated a wealth of encomia and reflections upon the life of the late fantasist / surrealist designer (who often prefered that professional designation to "artist"), ranging from rushed and insipid to graceful and heartfelt.

Every twenty years or so, with the regularity of a yearly avian migratory pattern, a fascinating thing happens within the realm of popular musical culture. A musical genre thought to have gone extinct is "re-discovered" by a select group of cultural cognoscenti, who proceed to present an idealized vision of this original culture, and to suggest that its past holds the keys to the future of musical and extra-musical culture alike. Since the social upheavals of the 1960s, this pattern has held in the United States with a remarkable consistency: the 1970s brought us a 1950s rock 'n roll nostalgia courtesy of syndicated television shows like Happy Days, the 1980s saw a not insignificant revival of 1960s psychedelicism, the 'Seattle sound' of the 1990s hearkened back to the perceived warmth or organicism of '70s rock, and the 'electroclash' of the '00s fed off of 1980s synthesizer pop (the more obscure the better) for its topical and aesthetic minutae.

In religious life there is nothing more worrying than those people who, rather than concentrating upon the joys of the spirit, are led instead to a fixation upon evil. There are people who have a combative temperament, and it is to be expected that they will engage in struggles and fights on behalf of their faith, but there are some people for whom the main expression of their faith becomes so-called "spiritual warfare." I have seen quite a bit of this. For many years I had a neighbour who was deeply involved in an evangelical Christian ministry that was mainly devoted to this cause. They were preoccupied with the Devil. They saw the Devil everywhere - the world is the Devil's playground - and they devoted themselves to fighting him through prayer, exorcism and other means. Among the Devil's minions they counted Catholics, Muslims, Mormons, Masons, Neopagans - in fact just about any form of spirituality other than their own specific version of Bible-based evangelical Christianity. Their perspective was extremely narrow. Anyone not "saved" was most likely "possessed" and in need of having demons cast out from them.

When I began to write my book Unofficial Release, I chose the title based on its mischievous ambiguity, given the multiple interpretations of the noun "release." In the lexicon of communications media, a release can be any type of product made available for public assessment and consumption. However, "release" has also been used historically as a stand-in for various kinds of liberation. Given that my book was about an extreme form of "do-it-yourself" media practice - i.e. controlling as many aspects of an audio recording's production and distribution as possible - I wanted to imply that the existence of self-released and handmade recordings could, and did, lead to the latter type of release. This could be a release from the need to pander to a pre-established market, a release from financial obligations (e.g. the considerable amounts of money needed to press a vinyl LP or compact disc), a release from the scrutiny of overzealous authorities, and, sadly, the occasional release from having to attain any reasonable standard of creative merit.

The first release on Takanobu Hoshino’s OtO label, is quite a startling and daring launch. The Fukushima based sound artist has chosen Francisco Meirino to kick start his new venture with an album of stark beauty and purity. It requires a deep listening approach. I know that term is a bit of a cliché these days, but this time I think it is truly valid. This work simply will not reveal the truth at its core without respecting its subtlety.

Legend of experimental music Z'EV (Stefan Joel Weisser, b. 1951) is preparing a project that hopefully will provide the funding to get his cine-cussion on the road. Cine-cussion is of one many unique projects of Z'EV (www.rhythmajik.com/cine-cussion.html). Z'EV, due to an unfortunate accident that shattered his kneecap at the end of tour, began to explore ways to make my cine-cussion equipment more compact and lighter. Now he is asking for our help to obtain and/or have developed the hardware and software necessary to enable me to pursue this project, make it practical for me to travel and perform with, and continue its evolution into the future.
