Review. NAHASH – DAATH (Drakkar Productions, 2016). Gnostic black metal for intellectual meditation

Although the band itself calls its style occult black metal, I would prefer to call it a Gnostic black metal band. This doesn’t mean they are not occult, I just would like to explain the deepness of NAHASH among many black metal bands that are shallow. NAHASH contains three good things: intellectual meditation with long songs of 8–9 minutes, deep philosophical Gnostic background and great powerful black metal music. All musicians are professionals playing together from 1993.

Review. NAHASH – DAATH (Drakkar Productions, 2016). Gnostic black metal for intellectual meditation

NAHASH (Hebrew: a snake) was created in Kaunas, Lithuania, and has released only two albums before: “Nocticula Hecate” (1994) and “Wellone Aeternitas” (1997). “Daath” demo was recorded back in 2003, and from that time the band worked with the new album which was recorded in 2015 and released now, in August 2016. All three albums are released and re-released by French “Drakkar Productions”.

The band’s ideas come from Gnosticism and other “lost” teachings like Nag Hammadi Codice. The vocalist and guitarist Xe Xe Chax Heyatha Zhaiyrhous is also interested in Theurgy. He is fascinated by late Lithuanian philosopher, mystic Algis Uždavinys’ works on Theurgy, Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, Sufism (by the way, American occult black band Nightbringer quoted A. Uždavinys as one of those whose books they are reading).

What is Daath (דעת)? I am not going to teach You mysticism here, but this unknown dimension in mystical teachings very well describes the work of NAHASH. The album was created for about 15 years. It’s not even 72 minutes (sic!) of music which is 11 songs and instrumentals, but also a real book, 32-page booklet, which describes each song not only with lyrics but also with various quotes from Rumi (sic!!!) to various Gnostics, and tremendous treatises like “Trimorphic Protennoia”.

The new album of NAHASH comes out as Digibook CD (size of DVD) and LP, then after about a month another two albums will come out remastered.

Intellectual archetypical journey-meditation of “Daath” is the best release not only this year and not only among Lithuanian albums. I can’t really tell you which album could be better for me now. If there are 10 points in the evaluation system, I give NAHASH “Daath” 100. For great music, strong lyrics with great concept and wonderful design by Rosvaldas Sarapinas.

11 words about the music of the new album of NAHASH: fast, strong, meditative, atmospheric, each song contains its concept, furious, fanaa.
