Neofolk band ROSE ROVINE E AMANTI: "Computer has definitely destroyed the musical market and musicians"

One of the greatest neofolk (or neo-rock-folk, as it calls itself) bands for me is ROSE ROVINE E AMANTI. Band's leader Damiano Mercuri talks straight from Roma (2016 05 17).

Neofolk band ROSE ROVINE E AMANTI: "Computer has definitely destroyed the musical market and musicians"

What collaborations were/are the most interesting and important to You and why?

I played with  Josef K. he’s a great artist, a kind of punk nobleman; I have to thank him a lot for the great memories and time spent in the past together and for his precious contribution in my music. But also Andrew King has been very great; unfortunately we just did together only one bootleg vinyl…but great to share some stages togheter!

I also would like to remember Belborn, we did a beautiful split together…

Also to have been in touch with Tony Wakeford from Sol Invictus it has been a quite good experience…then we  harshly quarreled, but I still remember him with love.

But let me tell you that during my RREA experience was so great to have met Gregorio Bardini…we still haven’t done any CD but we want in the future…he’s a great man and brilliant musician!

I also have to thanks all the friends and musicians who worked with me: Lucio Leone and Daniele Befanucci on drums; Christian valente on bass and sound engineering;  Giuseppe Lorenzoni on piano and violin  and of course, at last but no least Noemi on keyboards and Pamela on violin.

What are the main ideas are behind Your music? Could You name Your favorite Your compositions / albums / collaborations? What about the new album? The last one GIORNI DI SPLENDORE E SOLE came out in 2012.

They have changed from the beginnings… I wanted to explore a melancholy side mixed with some anger for the decadence of this modernistic  and criminal  world mixed up with a dramatic strong hope in Christ.

On a musical level I loved to mix neofolk  elements with some rock and songwriting touches… my favorite instruments were acoustic guitars blended with violins, keyboard and percussions. My favorites album  are Demian and “Giorni di splendore e sole”; “Rituale Romanum” is still interesting but terrible for the poor sound quality!

Actually my favourite songs are “Ave Maria” and “Europa is calling me”.

What ends, when there‘s no sound?

I’m not the person to ask, sorry! No idea!

Then, what is and what is not a Sound Art?

There are no standards, each artist follow his idea of sound; lots are mediocres and someone is good, but very fews are great! For what concern me I’m a little songwriter, but I tried to follow honestly my inspirations, but the lack of money didn’t let me to reach really what I wanted but I don’t complain, I’m enough lucky to have done something!

What do You think about relations between the old art and computer art? Are they compatible?

I think yes. But Computer has definitely destroyed the musical market and musicians; it started with the mechanical reproduction of the music, so people started to play a Vinyl or a CD instead of attending live music; but now people don’t buy even CDs, everything is on youtube. In this way artists have no more money to create their music.

What do You think about thousands of neofolk/industrial/ambient/tribal/electroacoustic/avangarde etc. bands/projects? Is it a kind of trend, o just a tendency forwards better music?

I think 90% of the releases are not good to me; but there is still some nice band or project, but I still see too many clones of Death in June: baritonal voices, two chords on a 12 strings guitar and some runes. Too boring for an Italian like me!

What do You know about Lithuania? How and when did You come to it? What Lithuanian and foreign musicians do You value most?

Ohhh…Lithuania!!! Such great Memories! I played 3 times there! Always great and supportive audience and very great people! I’d like to thank Raimundas from Vilnius in particular; I respect a lot Spanxti, great live band deeply inspired! And I loved so much your folk music, choral and instrumental! I got some CDs and I attended some gigs! I would call your folk music as “white folk”, but don’t ask me what it means!

What about niche art as my initiative to print out the first book about experimental music of Lithuania?

It sounds pretty interesting, and all in all is very good to deal with niche art: is the only one remaining art, commercial one is not anymore art.

What inspires You most?

Adam and the lost of Paradise; the strong  feelings of the decay of mankind from Eden; we’ve lost our perfection, our supreme beauty in being with God. Mankind lives the strong need to be an angel but we fail, we’re so fragile and we lose so many times; we get older, get sick, sad and bad…but all of us wants to become and angel; is the memory written in our soul of the Paradise; I’m quite impressed by the harsh fight between Satan and his legions and the angels; in each man there is a terrible spiritual  fight even if we can’t see it.  I feel this drama and I keep my fight alive. Salvation is so close to each of us but so many get ruined and lost themselves…it shocks me so hardly! I always pray for mankind.

What are You working on right now?

At the moment being I’m out of the scene and out of music; I need to be on my own for a while, to study and to see if I will have something worth to record again butI want to do an album with apocalyptic themes, especially based on the revelations from “La Salette”, “Garabandal”, “Fatima” and “Medjugorje” and the visions of some Saints like Katerina Emmerick, Teresa Neumann, Faustina Kowalska (who spent half of her life in Vilnius) Hildegard of Bingen and Maria Simma … but I still need time.

What does the name Rose Rovine e Amanti mean to You?

Actually it means past friends, concerts all over Europe, love for the European culture and something which is mine but it doesn’t fit well with me.

Let me thank you so much for your kind interest in RREA which honour me and surprised too!

I also would like to salute Lithuanian friends and the magical days I lived there!

Grazie mille!
