Provocative? A bit. For me, the best of the new nine songs in “She Is The Darkness” is “Wall Of Death” is one of the best rock song’s I’ve heard. Guess who wrote lyrics that are in the intro of that song? I leave them in Russian for Your pleasure: Я наивысшая гора, поддерживающая небеса своими туманными пиками. Я шепот на ветру палящий в бесконечных равнинах тундры. Я исчезнувший сон, охраняющий давно забытые тайны. Я безграничный океан омывающий твои берега. Я – стена смерти.
Only later, on the 9th of March, the band told me that the text was written by their member Julijus Aleksovas ir read by actor Sigitas Jakubauskas. "This is just a prologue to the song which created its atmosphere and mood", - told me guys.
Yes, the atmosphere together with the poem is really cool.
Meanwhile, other songs are also very good. First two – „Rusty Trombone“ and „The Edge Of The World“ – already have their videos. Perfect.
The third is aforementioned “Wall Of Death”, the peak of the album. After it here comes the “Storm” which is a slow Western movies-like ballad, nice and clear. “Your Ghost” digs deeper and You suddenly understand that You must listen to the album. “Pallbearer” is a slightly different song, which again reminds Americana, Southern rock style bands as 16 Horsepower, Woven Hand etc. Nice try. In Lithuania, we almost don’t have such music. This song is definitely also very good. “Truth Or Dare” is a playful melody, sing and dance, boys and girls, but don’t forget the darkness. Last two songs “Signs” and “Emptiness” makes me think that this album is a concept one, even though I don’t know the concept of it.
“Emptiness” is a very nice ending of the album. Sincerity wins. That’s the key to COLOURS OF BUBBLES. They play “simple rock”, but here we have a solid, nice, even philosophical album with perfect compositions and good artwork. The cover is one of the best I’ve seen – it reminds anything but not indie rock band’s cover.
Congrats, Julijus, Simas, Jonas, Tomas and Paulius. You’re my heroes. Thank You for the Music.
Info from band’s Facebook page:
For more than 8 years, the five officers from COLOURS OF BUBBLES have served their listeners the special blend between modern indie sounds with European-styled country feedback. Their debut (sic!) album “Inspired by a True Story” offers a darker, deeper reflection on the indie in the North Eastern Europe. Hailing from Šiauliai, a city often labeled the Lithuanian Manchester, COLOURS OF BUBBLES have played nearly 200 concerts in every corner of the Baltic States, and also Poland, Holland, Germany and France. Their festival appearances include the largest Baltic rock music festival Positivus in Salacgriva, Latvia; the oldest indoor indie festival Jyrock in Jyväskylä, Finland; the legendary Reeperbahn in Hamburg and also well-received showcases in such events as Tallinn Music Week, Co Jest Grane in Warsaw, Poland and Vilnius Music Week. The band also contributed their original soundtrack to the local staging of dynamic post-grunge era Adam Rapp’s play Finer Noble Gases at Šiauliai City Drama Theatre. Their first release “Today I Am Feeling Better Than Ever” gave COLOURS OF BUBBLES first recognition at local Northern Lithuanian awards ŠAMA in 2012. The single “Phoenix” and live recording brought them the Best Rock Band prize at the Lithuanian alternative awards T.E.T.E. for single „Phoenix“, and also nomination to the national „Grammy’s“ MAMA in January 2013. Their discography could not be complete without “Home” EP with remixes from the local prodigies Golden Parazyth and 96wrld in 2013. COLOURS OF BUBBLES n "Inspired by a True Story" was released on March, 2014 on M.P.3 label and reflects deep sessions with Šiauliai based musicians, including the songstress Matilda on “Cut It Out”. In this year’s January COLOURS OF BUBBLES won the rock band of the year award at main Lithuanian music awards M.A.M.A. and performed FLAGS live on its stage.
