CD review. BIX – Bix Ray. Rock makes our existence more meaningful!

They say you must hear AC/DC once in a lifetime if you like rock music. However, if you are a diehard fan of rock music, you should know what BIX is, and, of course, to listen to this band’s new album. Almost nobody expected that this legendary Lithuanian/European band started back in 1980 in Šiauliai town will release an album again. It’s not because this band started to release bad albums. All of them are very good, and it’s one of the most known Lithuanian bands. Anyway, the old hits are always great to hear, but I almost didn’t expect to hear THIS. Imagine beautiful artwork/clever and ironic lyrics/great melodies and strong guitars. BIX’s leader Samas is definitely one of those who make rock music into Rock.

CD review. BIX – Bix Ray. Rock makes our existence more meaningful!

So, the album.

Bix Ray was released (label “Meno Žmonės”) as CD digipack with lenticular cover on the 21st of October, 2015. The tracklist shows us that this band sings only in Lithuanian (actually, lyrics are quite sophisticated) and likes some different instruments, not only the main rock stuff.

1    Atverk Duris    4:05 – THE HYMN TO OUR LOST NATION
2    Madingai    3:50 – EVERYTHING’S SO HOLIWOODIZED… WHY?
3    Įgėlė  4:04 – ONE MORE IRONIC SONG ABOUT OR SOCIETY
Saxophone – Liutauras Janušaitis
Trombone – Valdas Surdokas
Trumpet – Dmitrij Levencov
4    Mano Gatvėje Šventė 5:21 – LYRICISM, NOSTALGIA
Trombone – Valdas Surdokas
Trumpet – Dmitrij Levencov
5    Nebeskauda    4:57 – “IT DOESN’T HURT ANYMORE”, sounds as JOHNNY CASH ALIVE AGAIN with his “Hurt”, so strong and painful
6    Vėl    4:34 – “I WILL RISE AGAIN…”
7    Eik    3:29 – “YOU’RE SURREAL…”
8    Pasaka    3:19 – POETRY IS UNTRANSLATABLE BUT VERY MEANINGFUL
9    Vakar Karys    4:49 – “YESTERDAY WARRIOR” IS PROBABLY AN ALLUSION TO THE FIRST ALBUM “BLIND SOLDIERS”; “IT’S SO EASY TO DIE…”
10    Visko Pradžia 4:29 „THE BEGINNING OF IT ALL” shows that JAZZ and ROCK are brothers that let you to see yourself in your mirror. Great ending of the album.

Big thanks to Justas Čekuolis.

I can say many things about BIX. I heard them back in 1988 when I was just a kid in the Singing Revolution. I discovered that they had first album back in 1980–1982 (Rats City) which was pure dirty grunge/punk rock. Most people know more lyric side of this band. But it is capable is (BI)X-RAY your feelings...

And I just want to thank BIX that it exists. It makes my existence more meaningful. “Life ends there where everything is broken…”

And, a must, some classic tunes:
